Beyond Our Skin

As African American, we are judged by our skin color.  Society bases our value on that one trait. Before anyone knows who we are. There is more beyond our skin. We have a history and a culture behind us. From the tips of our kinky curls to our toes there’s a story to be told. However, underneath it all we are people just like the rest of America. So why the hate?

This body of work addresses racial discrimination and identity. How it feels to be Black in America, to be angry, hurt, tired, and confused. Consistently hearing on the news about another Black person attacked or killed due to racial violence or police brutality.  Then immediately wondering if you’re going to be next. Too many lives have been taken. “Beyond Our Skin” acknowledges those black lives lost and every other that remains.

Other pieces represent Black beauty. Our hair and skin  are traits that people often stereotype. These features are what African Americans should embrace. These are strengths, not weaknesses. “Beyond Our Skin”should remind African Americans of their worth and the rest of society why the phrase “Black Lives Matter'' will never be forgotten.
